#36: Picture Perfect with Sew Stratton

Erin is the face (and lens) behind Sew Stratton. She’s an Austin-based photographer, fashion lover, volunteer, and occasional influencer — even though she's not fond of that term — who radiates positivity and loves helping people reach new heights. If you’ve ever wondered how to take a picture perfect photograph, what it’s like to be in a photo shoot, or are interested in learning more about nonprofits, you’ll want to tune in below.

We’re talking about photography, how she started making jewelry, and her new mentorship program. Like me, Erin also loves to geek out on plenty of things, so we get to be big ol’ dorks this episode, too. It’s great.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • How Erin found photography through a volunteer trip with the organization OneSight, and how she immediately fell in love with it. (3:16)

  • Why Erin considers storytelling such an integral part of photography. (4:57)

  • The best tips for brands and influencers working on a project together. (6:22)

  • Why learning how to say “no” is a critical skill to develop and the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people. (9:17)

  • Perhaps the stupidest thing we’ve ever heard of: these “flights to nowhere” that people are taking as an option for people to scratch their travel itch. (11:45)

  • How Erin started making jewelry and she shares her favorite piece she’s ever made. (14:58)

  • A look inside the goodie bags Erin provides to all of her clients, as well as the best music for a picture perfect photo shoot. (17:04)

  • Erin’s new mentorship program, including why she started it and the value a mentor can provide. (21:33)

  • The worst photography gig Erin ever had, and how she powered through it. (25:05)

  • Erin opens up about her public speaking career and offers her tips to feeling more confident when speaking in front of a group. (30:15)

  • A sneak peek at the two nonprofits Erin is planning to start — plus we set a goal for one of them! (35:55)

  • Erin’s top three inspirations in her work. (38:17)
