If you’ve ever poked around Twitter or an online forum, you’ve likely seen the cool power of online communities among writers. These writing groups are opportunities for writers and authors to network, learn, and share resources with each other. Deb Eckerling is one of the OGs of creating and growing these support groups. She built up Write On, a community that supports writers across the globe, and author of the recently released Your Goal Guide: A Roadmap for Setting, Planning, and Achieving Your Goals.

Deb and I talk about why communities and websites for writers are so important, tips for writing online and in print, setting goals, and how she knocked out a book in just three months. We also dive into some great crock recipes because we all have a little master chef in us.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • How Deb first began her writing journey, plus top ice cream flavors and other treats (shout out to Leah’s! DŌ Bites!). (0:50)

  • When inspiration found Deb at a Barnes and Noble, leading to the start of what would become Write On. (6:27)

  • The path Deb took from the day she started her support group to creating a thriving online writing community. (10:00)

  • The steps Deb has taken in building an email list that has helped her business and writing community grow. (12:15)

  • Why you can’t forget about the community of email marketing, as well as Deb’s tips for being successful on social media. (15:17)

  • A look inside Deb’s new book and how it can help you reach your business goals. (18:31)

  • How a book proposal (or a business proposal) can hone your messaging better than almost any other tool. (22:33)

  • Book marketing avenues that Deb has found surprising, and the opportunities she’s discovered along the way. (24:43)

  • The thing very few people know about Deb. WE GOT A SCOOP, PEOPLE. (30:35)

  • The top three things people should do right now to rethink their goals. (36:10)
