Author Michael C. Bland knows how to tell a good story. His novel, The Price of Safety, was named a 2020 Indie Book Awards Finalist in both the Science Fiction and Thriller categories. He also met iwth Columbia Pictures to pitch one of his stories to be turned into a movie, and won Honorable Mention in the 2015 Writer’s Digest Short Story contest, resulting in his poetry published in The Daily Palette.

But the art of storytelling is so much more than putting words to paper. Michael works diligently to envelop readers in what’s happening, and believes a story needs heart to truly succeed. We’re talking about all elements of how to write a book, from the outline process to marketing.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • Why Michael chose the year 2047 for the setting for his novel and the impact it has on the storyline. (2:40)

  • Some of the fun throwback references Michael included in his book, including Silversun Pickups and Prince. (5:50)

  • Why Michael didn’t want to make his book all about technology, and whether the science or the story drives The Price of Safety. (6:43)

  • Michael shares his writing process and how he outlined his book—great advice to anyone that’s interested in learning how to write a book! Plus, the one thing that can ruin any story. (8:54)

  • How Michael accidentally discovered how The Price of Safety could have a sequel as he was writing the book and how he was inspired by The Matrix trilogy. (11:25)

  • Why it’s as important to know how to design a book cover as it is to write a great story. Michael also shares how the cover came about and the one element no book cover should include. And shout out to Dorothy Mason, the book’s designer! (15:50)

  • Some of the marketing strategies Michael has put into place to promote his book, including how to market a book during a pandemic. (22:15)

  • Michael and I discuss the importance of having a routine between work and leisure, especially if you’re working from home, and the steps to take to create a routine. Plus, why taking time away from writing can help build your characters out and more fully develop them. (30:12)

  • Michael’s top inspirations for writing a book, including George Orwell’s 1984, the movie Minority Report, and the writer Michael Crichton. (35:34)
