#40: Almond Yogurt and Family Business with Matt Billings

GPCT Podcast Matt Billings Header.png

Have you ever given almond yogurt a try? Whether it’s a go-to snack or something completely new to you, Matt Billings has the inside scoop on all things almonds. Matt’s a father, farmer, and founder of vegan yogurt company AYO Yogurt, which contains almost a full ounce of almonds per cup.

Sustainably farmed, crafted, and cultured in LA, the naturally-flavored, dairy-free snack is available at places like Ralph’s, Bristol Farms, Lassens, and independent supermarkets throughout Los Angeles and Southern California, as well as select supermarkets throughout the country.

With a long family history of farming almonds in California’s sun-soaked San Joaquin Valley, Matt brings a passion for innovation, healthy living, and sustainability to his role as founder of AYO Almond Yogurt. The family has been at it since 1913, making Matt a fourth-generation farmer in the family business, which practices responsible farming and creating a product the entire family is proud of.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • Why Ayo Yogurt is a unique product in the almond yogurt space, and the importance of having a product come from the heart. (2:20)

  • Some of the exciting changes over the four generations of the Billings farm and why Matt still maintains the family values that were started more than 100 years ago. (6:54)

  • The process of how to harvest almonds, and the fruit that’s a first cousin of almonds. (8:39)

  • A look inside the flavors Ayo Yogurt has released so far, as well as a sneak peek of potential flavors to come. (13:58)

  • Matt shares the most surprising part of running a business. (18:12)

  • Some of the lessons Matt has learned from starting a business during the pandemic. (20:02)

  • Three snacks Matt enjoys and recommends for other snack aficionados and casual snackers. (25:07)
