#56: March Madness, College Shenanigans, and Karaoke with Chris Hayes

GPCT Podcast Chris Hayes Header.jpg

It’s March Madness, so we’re hopping right into it! After all, there’s no time to waste when it comes to filling out your brackets. Friend of the podcast Chris Hayes joins to chat some hoops, and because we go way back, there are plenty of fun tangents along the way.

We talk some of the best rides and variants of Disney World, a little college football, that Matt and Kim song from the Buick commercials (which has a great music video) and then hop into the part you’re all here for: two mildly informed fellas offer their bracket tips, including things to watch out for, such as schools named after toothpaste or what happens if a team has to bow out due to coronavirus concerns.

Also note that we recorded this right after the Selection Sunday show, so if something has changed by now, we’re not liable for wildly inaccurate information.

Highlights of our conversation include:

  • The laundry list of accomplishments Chris has, plus our favorite Disney World rides. (0:21)

  • Chris offers his predictions for the 2021 football season, despite this being a March Madness podcast. (3:20)

  • Whether it’s better to fill out one bracket or hundreds of brackets, and we dissect the prizes in ESPN’s Tournament Challenge. (7:05)

  • The weirdness of this college basketball season and how many teams missed games due to positive tests or an abundance of caution around COVID-19. (10:54)

  • A few upset picks we’re high on and how easily you can turn on a team over the course of the year. (16:38)

  • What in the world happens if a team has to be replaced or needs to miss a game due to a positive COVID-19 test? (19:25)

  • Why it’s important to put biases aside when you fill out your bracket, and Chris’s extreme sadness in watching our Miami Hurricanes lose to Loyola Chicago in 2018. (24:32)

  • The team Chris thinks is the most overrated, even though he knows nothing about them. (28:14)

  • Which team has a bright red football turf that has burned its memory into Chris’s brain. (30:21)

  • The quarantine hobbies Chris and I have picked up during this year of social distancing. (31:20)

  • Some basketball films like Air Bud and Space Jam, and how early cartoons were more than a little questionable. (35:48)

  • Our hot take Final Four picks — guaranteed to be at least 0% correct. (39:20)

  • The top three Drew Brees moments Chris has, as well as the ridiculous ways we would “take a sledgehammer” to our college classes. (44:10)

  • I share the time I performed karaoke at a WNBA game. Simpler times! (51:27)
